President Muhammadu Buhari ordered the sacking of Danladi Kifasi, the head of the civil service of the federation, yesterday, October 20, just two months to the expiration of his tenure.
However, the update which came with immediate effect, did not come with the announcement of a new replacement announced until the early hours of today, Wednesday, October 21.
The Guardian reports that 51-year-old Mrs Winifred Ekanem Oyo-Ita, has been named as Kifasi’s replacement. Oyo-Ita is presently the permanent secretary of the ministry of science and technology. The chartered accountant hails from Cross River and will be in the position acting as the service head.
It was revealed that the presidency ordered Kifasi’s retirement in order to ensure that his administration adheres to the federal character principles as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution (as amended). Although there was no statement by the presidency on Kifasi’s sudden removal, it was reported that Kifasi is from Taraba state where Lawal hails from, and his removal is also connected to the fact that he was having a running battle with some permanent secretaries.
Oyo-Ita Ekanem is from Adiabo community of Odukpani Local Council of Cross Rivers State. She attended the Queens College Yaba. She got her B.Sc Accounting at the University of Lagos in 1984 and holds a Master’s degree from the Nasarawa State University. She was Director, Finance and Accounts at the Head of Civil Service of the Federation and is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN).
