Usain Bolt stripped of Olympics medal

Usain Bolt, the Jamaican sportsman regarded as one of the best athletes in history, has been stripped of one of his record 24 medals.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced this on Wednesday, saying Jamaican Nesta Carter had been certified guilty of doping.

Carter was one of the Jamaican athletes who won gold in the 4x100m relay at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

He did not compete in Rio 2016, and has been fighting to clear his name. He tested positive for the banned substance Methlhexanamine.

All four members of the Jamaican relay team which participated in the Beijing game – which also included Michael Frater and Asafa Powell – have now been stripped of their medals.

Original 4x100m silver medallists Trinidad & Tobago are now likely to be upgraded to gold, with Japan boosted to silver and Brazil bronze.

Bolt, an 11-time world champion has never tested positive to any banned substance throughout his career.

Last summer, he described the Carter situation as heartbreaking, but said he would have no problem giving back a medal if the positive test was confirmed.

“It’s heartbreaking [the positive test] because over the years you’ve worked hard to accumulate gold medals and work hard to be a champion… but it’s just one of those things,” UK Telegraph quoted him as saying.

FIFA RANKING - Nigeria drops spot to end 2016

Nigeria drops one spot to end 2016 in the 51st position in the latest FIFA ranking

Football governing body, FIFA on Thursday, December 22 published its latest ranking of national team with the Super Eagles of Nigeria dropping one place to end 2016 in the 51th position.

Gernot Rohr's men who were 50th in the previous list are now the 51st best team in the world.

However, the team still maintained its 8th position in Africa behind, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Tunisia, Egypt, Algeria, Congo DR and Burkina Faso.

IGWE! Henry named Belgian national team assistant manager

Thierry Henry, former Arsenal and Barcelona star, has been announced as one of the two assistants of Roberto Martinez, the Belgian national team coach.

Henry will be part of the backroom staff alongside Graeme Jones, who was Martínez’s assistant at Swansea, Wigan and Everton.

The announcement was made as Martinez named his first senior squad since taking the Belgium job after Euro 2016.

According to Martinez, Henry “brings something completely different” to the squad.

“He’s someone who has been in the situation of having to develop a mentality in a team of chasing the dream of winning something special for his country.

“He is very much an important figure in our staff and we hope he will pass on his experience to the players.

“I’m very pleased with the effort of the federation to put in a support staff as impressive as it is. But always remember that the star is the talent of the players.

“The attacking quality that we have in our group is very rich. Thierry Henry’s experience of being able to go through that situation that we have as a team is going to be very important.

“Then when you go into the basics of simple attacking drills, as player you can get a lot from him. That’s going to be a big role from Thierry’s point of view.

Henry enjoyed a successful career with the France national team, winning the first of his 123 caps in June 1997, when his good form for Monaco was rewarded with a call-up to the U20 French national team, where he played in the 1997 FIFA world youth championship alongside future teammates William Galas and David Trezeguet.

He began his coaching duties with the Arsenal Under-18 but left the role in July after Arsene Wenger insisted that he couldn’t combine it with television punditry.

REVEALED: Dream Team MAY boycott quarter-final clash with Denmark

There is real chance that the Dream Team VI, Nigeria’s Under-23 football team to the Olympics, could boycott the quarter-final game against Denmark due to unpaid allowances.

Although the players declined to speak on the matter when contacted by TheCable, Samson Siasia, their coach, spoke to Brila FM about how the country had “disrespected” his team.

“We have been disrespected from all angles – the sports ministry, the Nigeria Football Federation,” Siasia said.

“Is that how you will treat your own children? We are not street kids. We have only been paid allowances for 11 days. There is no match bonus.

“What of all the months we have been training in Nigeria and Atlanta? That’s not fair. I have not received my salary for the past five months.

“Everything is upside down and the boys don’t want to play anymore. Whatever they want to do, I am with them. They are right for fighting for their rights.”

However, Yakubu Dogara, speaker of the house of representatives, has appealed to the team not to boycott the match.

He urged the players to take patriotism as a fulcrum of their campaign, and promised to “personally do everything” within his powers to intervene in the matter.

He said the team — with the likes of John Mikel Obi, Yakubu Umar, Oghenekaro Etebo and William Troost-Ekong — has a very bright chance of repeating the feat of the Atlanta ’96 Dream Team.

“We will do all we can to ensure that all entitlements due to the team are paid, as we are already talking to relevant government agencies,” Dogara said.

“Football, being the major unifying factor in the country, should be maximized by all for Nigeria’s continued joy and unity. We will stop at nothing to ensure that we get the team to excel in Brazil and for Nigeria to recreate the watershed of Atlanta ’96.”

THE OLYMPIC GOLD GLITTER: Kanu and co strike gold in Atlanta

Nwankwo Kanu is a name almost synonymous to elegant football in Nigeria. The man Kanu clocked 40 on Monday and he reminds us of his feat as the most decorated footballer in the country’s history.

Kanu was still a teenager when he became a celebrity after driving his nation to win the FIFA Under-17 World Cup with the Golden Eaglets; within months, he was living the dream, joining AFC Ajax in 1993 for €207,047.

He made his debut one year later and scored 25 goals in 54 appearances, winning the UEFA Champions League after coming on as a substitute in the final against AC Milan.

Nwankwo Kanu moved to the Serie A with Inter Milan for the sum of $4.7 million before the drama that was to change his life completely.

First, he achieved what catapulted him into the world football folklore, leading the Nigeria Olympic soccer team to the first ever gold medal in African football history and scoring the crucial goals, especially the two magical goals that shocked mighty Brazil out of the championship in the semi finals.

The anguish in the face of José Roberto Gama de Oliveira, better known as Bebeto, after Kanu’s goals would go on to become one of the most enduring images of the Olympics.

Atlanta ’96… Kanu sends Brazil packing

History was made as Nigeria, through the leadership of Kanu, defeated Argentina in the Final. The moment most captured on film after the final whistle was Kanu holding the match ball and his team mates rushing to carry him shoulder high.

Kanu then joined the greatest icons of African football by being named the African Footballer of the year.

Destiny was however awaiting him on his return to Inter Milan after the Olympics. He did a routine medical test which was supposed to be a normal occurrence and then the completely unexpected happened.

OVERCOMING HEART SURGERY
The test revealed a serious heart defect and his career was completely threatened as the news broke across the international media and it was thought that his career had ended after the aortic valve was replaced.

Kanu, a devout christian, stated during those trying times that God would deliver him and it happened just as he said.

He returned to football and his challenges actually set him thinking of saving many other people who could be inthe same shoes. That was the birth of the Kanu Heart Foundation.

In an interview, Kanu once said his ordeal opened his eyes and heart to what millions of young children are going through without support. Today, the Heart Foundation is one of the biggest legacies of “Papilo”.

ADDING TO ARSENAL’S ARSENAL
Kanu survived that huge challenge and continued with his career anew. It was to Arsenal FC of England he moved and he truly showed his amazing talent in spite of the world-class players jostling for positions in the team.



After adding to Arsenal’s armoury, he won multiple laurels and scored lots of goals that defied logic, especially his comeback hat-trick in that famous game against Chelsea. That game defined who Kanu was and he won loads of laurels for the Gunners.

Kanu again won the African Footballer of the Year award in 1999. Kanu left Arsenal and moved to West Bromwich Albion and later Portsmouth before calling it a day for club football in July 2012.

Due to his heart condition, he made the third-most substitute appearances in Premier League history, appearing from the bench 118 times.

INTERNATIONAL CAREER
At national team level, Kanu lost in the final of the African Cup of Nations on home soil in Nigeria in 2000 and played twice at the FIFA World Cup in 2002 and in 2010 when he captained the Eagles.

Overall, he scored 13 goals in 86 games before bowing out. He however continued to be part of the team as an ambassador and was on the pitch celebrating the AFCON win in 2013 with the Super Eagles.

After his retirement from active football, he is even now so busy with his Kanu Heart Foundation that is saving countless lives across the world.

Kanu has a Photo Studio, and remains a UNICEF goodwill ambassador, with many other projects ongoing.

As a legend and a patriot, Kanu still follows the national teams to games to inspire the youths and owns the Kanu Nwankwo football club playing in the lower leagues.

Nigeria Olympic team coach, Samson Siasia has named his final list of players for the forthcoming Rio Olympic Games.

Former U-17 and U-20 striker, Taiwo Awoniyi, was on the list of standby players as he failed to make the final 18-man squad list that has now been submitted.

Nigerians React to Le Guen's Rejection of Super Eagle's Job

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) had announced on July 18, that the former coach of the Cameroonian national team was the new Super Eagles handler and would be assisted Salisu Yusuf.
However since the news broke out Nigerians took to social media to vent their anger on the NFF for misleading the public about hiring a new coach for the Super Eagles.

Ken Carson Ejiofor was angered by the NFF’s false news saying: “Inconclusive appointment too,why conclude before rushing to the media.”

Frank Leonard Ozoike, another Facebook user, showed disappointment in the leadership of the Nigeria football federation.

He wrote: “We told you, soon the entire world will reject anything that has to do Nigeria simply because it’s an expired stuff made by the British company 102 years ago.. and has got an expiring date 1-01-2014. Nigeria is now worse than the expired Ebola, HIV drugs #mustAvoidHer !”

According to Compitent Bravo, there are a lot of illiterates in Nigeria because such an important news should not have been in the media if there had not been an official agreement between both parties.

FIFA Remembers Rasheed Yekini

The Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA) on Wednesday remembered Nigeria’s late ex-international, Rasheed Yekini, four years after his death.

In a statement on the world football governing body’s website, it looked back on his memorable goal which became historic and the subsequent celebration.

Yekini, who is Nigeria’s highest goal scorer (37 goals) till date, died of illness on May 4, 2012, at the age of 48.

He entered history books after scoring the Super Eagles’ first ever FIFA World Cup goal at the 1994 finals held in the US in the 3-0 group stage win over Bulgaria.

“Yekini, who played for several clubs in Spain, Greece, Portugal and Switzerland, could hardly believe he had scored and spontaneously grabbed the net, shaking it and crying in celebration,” the statement read.

“The photo of the Nigerian international captivated the world and even today the former striker remains a respected figure in the global football family.”

Yekini represented the nation in five major tournaments, including two World Cups.

In 1993, he became the first Nigerian to be voted African Footballer of the Year.

He helped the Super Eagles to win the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia, where he also topped the goal charts and was named best player of the competition.

He also participated at the Olympic level in Seoul in 1988.

BREAKING NEWS: Valencia sack Gsry Neville

Valencia football club has sacked Gary Neville, former Manchester United footballing veteran, following an uninspiring time at the club.

In a statement on Wednesday, the club said: “Valencia Football Club have today parted company with Gary Neville as Head Coach.

“After careful consideration, the Club have decided to make a change with the best interests of the Valencia CF moving forward this season. We thank Gary for his work at Valencia and wish him the best in the future.

“The Club have, today, appointed Pako Ayestaran as Head Coach until the end of the season.”
Ayestaran was the assistant coach at the club from 2001 to 2004, and helped the team clinch two La Liga titles and a UEFA Cup trophy.

From 2004 to 2007, when he was an assistant coach at Liverpool FC, the English club won the 2004/2005 UEFA Champions League, as well as the 2006 FA Cup Final.

As head coach, Ayestarán was Champion in Maccabi Tel Aviv, winning one league and two Cups.

4 Important Lessons for the Super Eagles - AFCON Failure

The Super Eagles of Nigeria were beaten in Alexandria by the Pharaohs of Egypt on Tuesday, spelling the end of their quest to qualify for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Nigerians are sad and angry over this development, but this is the time to learn important lessons that may help to forestall future recurrences. Here are just four of them.

HIRING AND FIRING IS CATASTROPHIC

The instabilities/inconsistencies in the choice of the team handlers, team captains and match venues from time immemorial have shown that the stability of the team is affected. Since the AFCON qualifiers started, Nigeria has changed three coaches in the three matches played so far. Captains were also changed thrice: Vincent Enyema to Ahmed Musa to Mikel Obi.
The team management and team selection process has always been a major problem from Stephen Keshi’s resignation/sack to the employment of Sunday Oliseh, and his unexpected resignation and the distractions that came with it. Drafting in Samson Siasia and Emmanuel Amuneke after Oliseh’s departure was always going to be a huge challenge to team stability.

NO PLANNING, NO SUCCESS

“Failure to plan is planning to fail,” they say. While Egypt was busy playing friendly games in preparation for the double-header against Nigeria, Nigeria was preoccupied with internal wrangling with either the coach in charge or one problem or the other.
When Nigeria failed to qualify for the 2015 AFCON, the Nigeria Football federation (NFF) never saw it as a means of self-check, and of correcting all the mistakes and implementing the restructuring that our football needed.

EAGLES COACHES AVERSE TO RISK-TAKING

Super Eagles coaches might have shot themselves in the foot with their fear of the unknown. Kelechi Iheanacho, Alex Iwobi and some very fresh talents called into the team might have saved Nigeria in the two games against Egypt if given enough time to prove what they could do. Kelechi was upwardly mobile, penetrating and a big threat to Egypt in Kaduna but the coaches probably thought they needed players with more experience. Same for Alex Iwobi in the two games. It turned out that Nigeria absolutely struggled in Alexandria in moving forward and in transition until Iwobi was brought in rather too late. But immediately he was introduced, the game completely changed with his youthful vigor and desire. If Iwobi had started the game or early in the second half, the result could have been different.

EAGLES LACKED TEAM BONDING

One of the Nigeria’s biggest moments in football can be traced to the days of a stable and consistent first-team starting eleven. Winning the African title in 1980, winning the same championship in 1994 as well as the 2013 edition, the media and the fans could close their eyes and pick at least eight players who would start any game.
It was the same situation when Nigeria won the Atlanta 1996 Olympics and excelled at the 1994 FIFA World Cup. But in the recent Super Eagles, the starting eleven is so inconsistent, thus the team lacks team bonding and understanding, as it is perpetually in transition due to frequent changing of coaches and the resultant change in the invited players.

Iwobi's father decides where his son is going to play

Chuka Iwobi, father of Arsenal youngster Alex, says his son’s allegiance is to Nigeria and not England.
The rising star is being targeted to play for England having come through the country’s junior ranks.

But his father, a former Vasco and Femo Scorpion player, told TheCable: “In terms of where he is now, he has allegiance to Nigeria.

“I am not in a position to say England has come for him or not. I cannot confirm, I cannot deny. He has come to Nigeria, to play for Nigeria.

“He is, according to FIFA registration, a Nigerian player. So, it is not even a question. He is here to play for Nigeria. According to FIFA records, he is with Nigeria.”

Iwobi also spoke on his expectations from his son’s international career.

“I am praying for it to be the beginning of a long journey for him playing for Nigeria and getting to that pinnacle of playing for Nigeria as well,” the lawyer said.

“Maybe, God willing, who knows? We don’t know where the journey will take him to. Hopefully with hard work, dedication and respect, doing well for Nigeria, he could go the way of his uncle, Jay Jay Okocha who captained the Super Eagles.

“What a better feeling it would be for me as a father to see him play for Nigeria and becoming a captain in the future, though that’s a long way down the line.”

England makes Last attempt to snatch Iwobi from Nigeria

Alex Iwobi, Super Eagles and Arsenal winger/striker, is being targeted by the England FA to abandon Nigeria for the three lions of England.

According to Mirror.co.uk, Iwobi, the new kid on the block, is at the centre of a tug of war between England and Nigeria after becoming a regular in the Gunners’ first team set-up since the turn of the year.

He played for the three lions U16, U17 and U18 before choosing to represent his country of birth, Nigeria.

Iwobi joined Arsenal while still at primary school, and signed a new long-term contract in October 2015.

Later that month, he made his competitive debut for the club, starting in a 3–0 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday in the round of 16 of the League Cup.

He made his Premier League debut four days later in a 3–0 win against Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium, as an added-time substitute for Messut Ozil. Iwobi started in the first team for the 2015-16 FA Cup 3rd and 4th round home wins against Sunderland and Burnley respectively.

In March 2016, Iwobi scored his first senior goal in a 2–0 away victory against Everton.
The chances of Iwobi playing for England will forever be lost if he plays for Nigeria in the double header game against Egypt for the AFCON qualifiers.

Sad! Former Super eagle midfielder is dead(Photo)

Former Nigerian national team midfielder John Ene Okon has passed on. The player who featured for Nigeria at the 1987 Fifa U-20 World Cup as well as the 1992 African Cup of Nations was reported to have died in Calabar on Tuesday March 15.

He was the coach of Calabar Rovers until his death.

There had been torrents of tributes pouring-in for the humble late player with team mate Etim Esin posting a message on his facebook page saying it was indeed a sad news.

The current Enugu rangers coach Imama Amapakabo was full of words for the late player, saying he has lost a good friend.

He said: “Good friends we’ve had good friends we’ve lost, good times we’ve had good times we’ve shared together along d way, in this great I can’t forget the past.
“My tears run endless ever since the news broke to me early hours of this morning. We shared so many times and moments together, pained and heart-broken I am, but what is the answer to the question I ask and want to ask ‘why you,why now’? Who do I question man or the good lord?
“Pained as I am all glory to God for the times we shared together.
Interestingly, Okon was supposed to clock 47 years on the day he died, he was born on March 15 1963.

Apology Nigerians, Oliseh is lying - NFF

The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has apologized to Nigerians over the sudden resignation of Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh.

The NFF, in an official statement posted on its website Monday, assured Nigerians that it would not let the development affect the team’s preparation for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.

It said: “The NFF seizes this opportunity to apologize to Nigerians for the situation we find ourselves though not of our own making. We assure the teeming Super Eagles supporters that we shall patriotically remain committed to the success of the team.

“This is already evidenced by the swiftness with which we have reconstituted the coaching crew and received the assurances of the patriotism of the Super Eagles players who have vowed to fight for the Nigerian and spirit, and ensure that not only do we qualify for the African Nations Cup but also that our long term goals are not derailed.

“The NFF gives the foregoing assurances despite the circumstances which has arisen with the untimely resignation of coach Sunday Oliseh,” the federation said.

The NFF accused Oliseh of lying about contract violations, unpaid wages and benefits to players and assistant coaches as reasons for his sudden resignation. The NFF also accused Oliseh of backing out of their agreement after collecting his salaries and other allowances.

“….the decision (to resign) was taken unilaterally without discussion with the NFF or any of its officials, without giving the requisite 1(0ne) month as stipulated in his contract,” it said.

The federation also claimed that Oliseh tore apart the team with his management style, sacking people at will and that if the NFF did not step in, all the senior players in the team would have dumped it like erstwhile captain, Vincent Enyeama.

“The coach virtually tore the team apart with his impulsive style of man management, if not for the way the NFF president and vice presidents handled the matter, his disagreement with erstwhile captain Vincent Enyeama would have seen all the senior players quit the Super Eagles,” it said.
